Humble Roots and Big Dreams
Gurjit was born in Miadi Kalan, a small village nestled in Amritsar district. Like most girls in rural India, her future could have easily been confined to household chores. But her parents had a different vision. They were determined to provide quality education and better opportunities to their daughters. This decision would end up changing the course of Gurjit’s life.
Her parents enrolled Gurjit and her sister in a boarding school at Kairon, near Tarn Taran. What seemed like an academic decision slowly turned into the birthplace of a dream. A girls’ hockey academy nearby became the unexpected spark. Both sisters, curious and adventurous, approached the coach—Sardar Sharanjit Singh—who readily welcomed them into the academy. The journey of holding the hockey stick began there, though it wasn’t easy.
The Struggle Before the Shine
In her first week of training, Gurjit struggled to even hold the stick properly. Frustration crept in and quitting seemed like the easier path. But support from her coach and teammates kept her spirit alive. She gave herself one more chance. And this time, she didn’t look back.
From that moment, Gurjit trained with unmatched dedication. Early mornings, long practice sessions, and an unshakable drive became her daily routine. Slowly, she started participating in tournaments at the district level, then state-level competitions in the Under-14 category. Her consistent performance earned her a spot in the school junior national team. Between grades 6 and 12, she played every possible tournament—from district to national levels—becoming a name to remember on the field.

The real turning point came when Gurjit was in 12th grade. She was selected for the school senior national team and stunned everyone by becoming the top scorer of the tournament. Her performance wasn’t just noticed—it was celebrated. In 2012, she earned a place in the Junior Indian Hockey Team. Her drag-flicks were sharp, fierce, and impossible to ignore.
By 2014, Gurjit’s dream took its most significant leap—she was selected for the Indian Senior Women’s Hockey Team. What followed was a golden journey of medals, milestones, and memories.
An International Streak of Glory
Wearing the Indian jersey, Gurjit’s magic truly came alive. She wasn’t just playing; she was dominating the field. Her drag-flicks became lethal weapons, and her defensive strategies proved unbreakable. In the South Asian Games, she bagged a gold medal with five powerful goals. She then went on to win gold in the South League with three goals and clinched a silver medal at the Asian Games with a jaw-dropping 10 goals.
