Born as Louis Talbot, this white Kiwi lad has embraced Sikhism with a heart full of devotion and a soul grounded in service. Today, he not only wears the turban with pride but also carries the weight of responsibility as a soldier in the New Zealand Army.
Raised in the quiet town of Timaru in Canterbury, and a former student of Christchurch’s prestigious Christ’s College, Louis led a fairly typical life until a chance encounter redirected his entire path. During a casual visit to a friend’s house, he met a Sikh man whose calm demeanor sparked his curiosity. Louis, eager to understand more, asked him about Sikhism. The man didn’t preach, he simply offered one suggestion: visit Gurdwara Jagat Guru Nanak Sahib in Christchurch.
That single visit to the Gurdwara turned into a weekly ritual. Every trip brought him deeper peace and connection. Surrounded by the warm hospitality and profound spirituality of the Sikh community, Louis began asking questions—lots of them. He explored the teachings of Sikh gurus, the sacrifices in Sikh history, and the powerful message of equality, courage, and service.
As his thirst for understanding grew, so did his desire to immerse himself more fully in Punjabi culture. His journey eventually led him to Punjab, the heartland of Sikhism. There, he stayed with a Sikh family and began learning the Punjabi way of life from its roots. His most transformative moment came when he was baptized at Sri Kesgarh Sahib in Anandpur Sahib, one of the holiest sites for Sikhs. It was at this sacred place that Louis Singh Khalsa was born—spiritually and emotionally.
During his time in Punjab, Louis learned Gurmukhi, recited bani, and developed a deep love for the rhythmic beauty of kirtan. He honed his language skills by reading street signs and conversing with locals. A visit to the Golden Temple, or Darbar Sahib in Amritsar, left him in awe. The spiritual energy of the place further deepened his devotion. By the time he returned to New Zealand, Louis wasn’t just a follower of Sikhism—he was living it. He began learning to play the tabla and perform kirtan, adding sound to the soul of his spiritual journey.
But Louis’s transformation wasn’t only spiritual—it was also physical and mental. Inspired by Sikh values of bravery and selfless service, he set his sights on serving his country. He joined the New Zealand Army and trained rigorously, pushing his limits every day. On July 4, 2020, during the passing out parade of 63 new recruits, Louis made headlines—not just for his striking appearance in a green turban, glowing face, and light brown beard—but for what he represented: a true convergence of cultures, values, and aspirations.
His unique story caught attention far and wide, earning him a growing following on social media. On Instagram, he goes by @louissinghkhalsa, where he shares snippets of his spiritual journey, Sikh teachings, travels, and army life. His page is a blend of inspiration and authenticity, capturing his love for Sikhism and commitment to discipline.
Louis has already traveled to over 25 countries, not just as a tourist but as a seeker—visiting Gurdwaras, meeting fellow Sikhs, and absorbing the richness of the global Sikh community. For him, this is just the beginning. His biggest achievement so far has been completing his initial army training, but his goals are far from small.
Now, he is focused on perfecting his military training and preparing for deployments. At the same time, he remains committed to mastering languages like Punjabi, Hindi, and others to communicate more effectively and connect more deeply with people from diverse backgrounds. His life is a compelling blend of discipline, devotion, and daring.
